Why a good school is subjective
A high-performing school may suit a self-directed student who thrives in a fast-paced environment. The same setting may overwhelm a child who needs more individual explanation, reassurance or time to practise foundations.
Likewise, a neighbourhood school with attentive teachers and a healthy routine may be an excellent fit for one learner, even if it attracts less attention online. Academic results matter, particularly before the PSLE, O-Levels or A-Levels, but confidence, motivation and consistency matter too.
Look beyond reputation when assessing schools
Parents can learn more by considering whether their child is receiving clear feedback, understands what is taught in class and is willing to ask for help. Notice whether grades are stable or slipping, but also whether homework causes repeated distress or avoidance.
School quality can change as staff move on, programmes evolve and a cohort’s needs differ. A school that suited an older sibling may not automatically suit a younger child. Review the current fit rather than relying only on old impressions or broad rankings.
